舞-乙HiME 0 ~S.ifr~

舞-乙HiME 0 ~S.ifr~
(also known as Mai-Otome 0: CIPHER)
My adrenaline was pumping so fast after watching episode 1 that I got to blog this down asap…

Another superb production by SUNRISE animation, [舞-乙HiME 0 ~S.ifr~] really makes me look forward into the months that is to come of 2008.

What is HiME? By “Hime”, it refers to the title of “Princess” in Japanese. However, it’s intentionally spelt “HiME”, as in [舞-HiME]. That’s “Highly-advance Materializing Equipment” for you.
Project HiME first started off with a TV series of 26 episodes titled [舞-HiME] in year 2004. The series revolved around Fuuka Gakuen, with girls possessing abilities of HiME seemingly all gathered at the same place, unknowingly. HiMEs adopt a “CHILD” as their power, and they battled “SLAVES” that appear to have been summoned by someone working from behind the scene.

The HiMEs, who became really good friends, winded up having to fight one another to their deaths in order to protect their love ones. And when their CHILD gets defeated in battle, their love one dies. So it’s a choice between your friends and the one you love. The series is a combination of friendship, romance, comedy, misunderstanding, love, and courage, despite an average plot. The series also hints of lesbianism.
I watched the series and loved the project for 2 things: (1) its soundtracks, and (2) the HiME concept - that you put your life and your love one’s life on the line, in order to protect your love one; hence it’s a dilemma between to fight or not to fight, worse, against your friends.

SUNRISE did not let us down when they released [舞-乙HiME] in year 2005, another 26-episodes TV series featuring all the same cast from [舞-HiME], same name, same voice, same personality and characteristics, just a different role. Those who had watched the predecessor would have really enjoyed this show as each familiar characters debut in the show. Soundtracks lived up to expectations too, kudos to LANTIS music productions.

The scene of [舞-乙HiME] takes place in Gardenrobe, an Otome training academy in the country of Windbloom. Otome is an honorable profession serving the royalty and politicians. The chosen ones get to sign a life-contract with the royalty, in which they pledge their celibacy and life in protecting their master and nation, and is thus conferred the rank of Meister-Otome, and bestowed a meister-gem that upgrades their Otome robes.

The HiME concept was brought over into this series; Meister-Otomes can only draw on their elemental gem’s power when their masters grant them the permission to do so, hence connecting each other’s lives together. Once Meister-Otomes are killed in battle, their King or Queen dies. The hint of lesbianism was also brought over.

[舞-乙HiME] resolves around the friendship of 3 girls, comedy, a love triangle, a 3-part song, a conspiracy which unveils a hidden ancient weapon, and the history of the Sapphire of the Azure Sky.
Set 1 year after the incident in [舞-乙HiME], [舞-乙HiME Zwei], a part 2, was released in year 2006 as a 4-episodes OVA and it set the [Project HiME] fans into ecstasy. An asteroid on a collision course with Windbloom is destroyed – barely – by an international task force of Meister Otomes.

More fast-paced actions were seen; fiercer battles, stronger foes, a conspiracy that threatens to shatter the very foundations of Otomes’ power source, and the Sapphire of the Azure sky, possibly the only weapon powerful enough to defeat the new adversary.
This time round, [舞-乙HiME 0 ~S.ifr~], release on 22 February 2008 as a 3-episodes OVA, is a prequel to [舞-乙HiME], with the main story arc centered around the Sapphire of the Azure sky, and around ladies who wore it in the past.

Episode 1 is a mere 28 mins, but choreographed fighting moves were seen, character designs and names retain the usual styles, lesbianism is quickly hinted at, lotsa Moe and comedy still exist, conspiracy still lingers, and the trademark HiME concept remains.

Below's a short trailer of [舞-乙HiME 0 ~S.ifr~]

What sets my adrenaline pumping was that Meister-Otome fightings scenes are not draggy; each and every moves were set to kill or deal maximum damage. What took me by surprise was that Rena Sayers’ latent powers were even too much for the Lofty Crimson Jade meister-gem that it went overloaded on her. That would mean more powerful gems to look forward to! Rena Sayers was last seen with her meister-gem disintegreting and swallowed by the massive explosion. But if the King of Windbloom is still alive, that would meant she survived.

I can’t wait for episode 2 to come!

Services in Japan Part 4

services - JAPANESE GIRLS BEDROOM

Information (in italics) wholly quoted from Dannychoo (do visit); pictures from Akiba Map.

"Are you 99.9% devoted to 2D girls where the other 0.1% is casually curious about 3D girls? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in a 3D girls bedroom playing with her in pajamas? Well wonder no more thanks to the entrepreneurial otaku business mind..."

"AkibaMap brings us coverage of Akiba Girls Domitory [[Akiba Jyoshi Ryo]あきば女子寮] - a bit like the maid cafes without the food. Well you can bring your own food but they charge you an extra 500 yen - for bringing *your own food*! Not much different than a slap in the face with a wet dog..."

"Below: The dormitory is an office done up to look like a dorm filled with girls bedrooms..."
Q: I spot a PS controller...
"Below: Some of the bed rooms have a Wii. The girl will grab your Wiimote and yank it around the room..."
"Below: And this is what it all costs...
1,680 yen - "Normal" course (Sit with girl in her room and talk)
2,000 yen - "Lil Massage" course (Girl massages your shoulders on your way out)
2,300 yen - "Deluxe" course (Girl massages your shoulders and hands... )

1,000 yen - "Normal" course for girls (for girls who are "girls-love" types)
1,500 yen - Girls photo course - you can wear the girls costumes and take photos."
"All the courses above last 30 mins where they then chuck you out. If you want to play games like "paper scissors stone" with the girl then they charge you a measly 200 yen extra. Thats not all folks, they have more extras to add to the bill which should hopefully bleed the otaku dry of their money as follows.

1,000 yen - "Koromo Gae" - pay this to get the girl to change into a costume.
1,000 yen - Chekki - "Chekki" is a product (by fuji film I think) - a bit like an instant poloroid camera. Pay this to have a pic with the girl. Then take the pic and show your friends who your new girlfriend is.

1,000 yen - "Renai Manga" - "Renai" means "Romance." The girl will read you a romantic manga - you are not allowed to have your hands in your pocket while she reads.
1,000 yen - "Binta" - a "Binta" is a slap to the face. Yes! pay to be slapped in the face by a girl in pajamas!
1,000 yen - Pay extra to have your shoulders massaged for longer..."

"Below: Another typical girls bedroom. What you won't find are beds because this is not the place to go for hanky panky. If you are looking for hanky panky then there are plenty of places in Kabukicho in Shinjuku. Just watch out for the Yakuza..."

Q: That's another Wii~ and who says you can't go hanky panky on sofas? I like the whiteness of this room, esp. the carpet.
"Below: And here are some pics of cutie Sola-chan who "lives" at the dorm..."

Q: She's fat.
"The dorm has its rules...

  • Dont take your own photos - or the dorm manager will 'confiscate' your camera...
  • Dont touch the girls - especially their eyes.
  • Dont tease the girls - especially the size of their eyes.
  • Dont ask the girl for private mail address or phone number.
  • Dont ask the girls personal questions (what color are your pantsu etc).
  • Dont run amok (what sort of rule is that?)
  • Dont bring glass bottles (which you may break and hold the dorm girls hostage)
  • Drunk or members belonging to violent groups are not allowed. Violent group members are easily spotted because they have "I am a violent group member" written on their foreheads.
  • Depending on how busy they are, they may chuck you out after 1 - 2 hours..."
"Convinced? If so then a map of the dorms here..."
Q: She's fat.
Q: She's fat.

Q: She's still fat.

Interviewer: Will you try this?
Q: Nope.
Interviewer: Why not?
Q: It’s just so weird having to PAY to go in, chat with a stranger within a stipulated 30 mins. And when you know the time is counting, the anxiety just makes you so uptight isn't it? I can’t speak Japanese anyways… *Shrug*.
Interviewer: What if it’s my treat?
Q: Free? Why not? There’s Wii inside you know? Just as long as that fat girl’s not there…

A DAY's OUT
Headed out today with the intention to recce Sim Lim Square for Wacom Graphics Tablet... and since I am heading out~ might as well plan the trip a little~ and bring my camera along~ (^__^)

*Refuel at Esso... inflate tyres... drop a cheque... head to Temasek Poly...*

Temasek Polytechnic's Library Lvl 8; when's the last time you've been there?
Why am I there? Because its the best place to get your hands on the latest editions of very expensive books!
Especially books like these! (am I turning Geek or wat?). TP Library is a treasure cove, selections are so much better than the National Library, and the fact that I can find most of the latest books goes to tell that TP students are not really reading much.
On the way towards SLS, along Jalan Besar, stuck in the usual traffic jam and spotted this banner... wondering if such services are still in demand...
A&T: Tape Duplication / Systems Conversion / DVD.VCD Encoding / Looping Service. Call 6396 5225.

Still along Jalan Besar, before Mayo Street: this is the 5th time I've passed this hotel and I had purposely planned this route so I can get stuck in the traffic jam to take this picture! I kept forgetting my camera the previous 4 times... My secondary school friends might find this hotel familiar...
Finally reached Sim Lim Square, Singapore's largest electronics and computer centre!I tell you, despite being there countless times, I am still very much thrilled by all the gadgets there! Its like Pokemon... gotta collect them all! Next on my list is a SmartPhone or HTC Touch, then a Video Camera, then a digital SLR... but I am broke!

Had checked out Nintendo Wii prices. Japanese sets are selling for as low as S$330, and as high as S$530. Whereas the US (local) sets are selling for S$660, to as high as S$700+.

Not counting Wii-Sports (which is a standard package), some shops sells the Wii package with 2 free (C.M.I) games, while some 3 free (C.M.I) games. Funny thing was, the shop at the basement dared to count the Wii-Sports game = 5 free games inside. *C.M.I. = Cannot Make It. There are even "Modified" / "Refurbished" sets there (which allows you to play pirated Wii games, amid unstably) . But I have no interest to ask.

If you're gonna buy Nintendo Wii there... do your homework thoroughly first before heading to SLS. Check through at least 4 or 5 shops. They are hush about the prices, and I could tell they hate quoting prices over the counter, yet cannot refuse telling me. Also, they are trying to get rid of their Japanese sets, hence quoting you very low prices, assuming you dunno the difference between US and Jap versions.

When I further enquired about the US sets, this fella whipped out the calculator, and before pressing his magic number, asked me: "What's the lowest price you've got so far?". I smiled at replied: "Market price range lah, what's your rate at?". His magic number: S$668.

Lowest US package I am seen in Simei: S$620... WIN.

Anyways, I was there for Wacom Graphics Tablet! Almost forgotten about my purpose. Kokuhen-san was telling me he bought his first Wacom tablet for around S$400+... but my budget is only like S$100+... was there recce-ing for "pah-liah" brands...

Below's a Genius brand (Taiwan) 4" x 5.5" tablet, retailing at S$79 @ atf Multimedia Accessories (level 4, you wun missed it).

A 8" x 6" tablet is more of a decent size, retailing at S$129. (I asked the boss for permission to photograph this). Hopped around a few other stores and conversations summed up as:

Storekeeper: you wun find wacom here (SLS) anymore, no shops selling, people scared off by the price, so we dun carry anymore.

Finally, at another shop at Level 5... I spotted another Genius brand 8" x 6" tablet, no price-tag. Below it, is a second box, same brand, same dimensions, just different packaging. Upon examination, the box on top is newer, and comes with better bundled softwares. Here's the conversation of the day:

Me: Boss, wats the diff between these two ah?
Boss: No difference, same, just different packaging.
Me: (pissed that he’s not telling me one of them comes with newer bundled softwares) So how much is this?
Boss: Erm, wait ah, let me recall…
Me: (already prepared to get shit answer)

*there are 3 sizes of tablets on the shelf placed in ascending order of sizes…*

Boss: Oh, its S$49 (smallest), S$59 (medium), and S$69 (largest, the 8”x6”). Yea.
Me: (ROFL, No shit!) S$69… hmmm~(faking a bit)
Me: (pushing my luck) $65 can anot?
Boss: Very cheap already lah… S$67 lah~
Me: Okay~ (woo hooo!)

Guess what? The bundled software comes with Photoshop CS3 Extended (trial)!

Leaving the place... chanced upon this telcom shop... reminds you of SingTel, no?
Had some time left before picking up tonic-babe, so I hopped by 四马路 area... spotted another Zodiac reading!
Click picture for larger view...
Further to the left of Burlington Square, Summer View Hotel, ideal place for stay over if you've got foreign friends coming over. SLS is just 5 mins walk up the street. Ask me for a scan of the name card ya (while I still have it).

Just a stone throw away from Summer View Hotel (can you spot its sign-board in the background?), you'll find Hawaii Hostel.

Looks like this from the outside...Right inside before heading up the stairs...
Office is just the first room to the left, on level 2. Counter's tend by a skinny Chinese uncle in his 50s. Rates are as low as S$16 for a hostel room, $26 for a single bed room (with aircon, common bathroom), $30+ for double bed room with toilet and aircon, $40+ for 3 beds with aircon. Max price is S$48.

Place looks decent.

Services in Japan Part 3

services - FOOT SPA CAFE

Read the below from Dannychoo's and thought I could share...

Information (in italics) wholly quoted from Dannychoo (do visit):

"There is now a cafe type place in Osaka called Ashi Yu Ya where you can go and have a cuppa Japanese tea while soaking your bare feet in a tub of hot water with a traditional Japanese maid called a Jyochu [女中[じょちゅう]]. ..."

"A foot spa is known as "Ashi Yu" [足湯[あしゆ]] and can also be found at many Onsen (hot spa) around Japan. ..."

"So what are they charging for this invaluable service? "
  • Trial course - 1,950 yen: You get to stick your feet in a tub of hot water for 15 mins - *alone*. But the maid does give you a hand massage.

  • 30 minute Basic "hand course" - 3,900: Stick your feet in a tub of hot water together with the maid for 10 minutes. She then gives you a hand job (hand massage) for 20 mins and you get a cuppa Japanese tea.

  • Girls get a discount - two girls get the "hand course" for 3,900 yen.
  • 30 minute foot reflexology course - 4,500 yen: Share the tub with the maid for 10 mins and get your feet massaged for 20. Cuppa tea after.

  • 60 minute foot reflexology course - 8,800 yen: You would think paying more gets you more time in the tub with the maid but you would be wrong - 10 mins in the tub and 50 mins of foot massage.

  • 90 minute ultimate course - 12,500 yen: 10 mins in the tub, 20 mins hand job, 50 mins foot job and 10 mins of punching your shoulders - cuppa tea after."

"For girls who are interested in working at Ashi Yu Ya, they're are looking for staff and are paying 1,200 yen per hour and you need to be between 18 and 25..."

"Not too sure about the hygiene aspect of this though. If I was a cute traditional Japanese maid, I certainly wouldn't want to share a hot tub of water with a hairy oily salary man.... "

Q's comment: Try this out? No way. Your treat? No way either.

Ah, by the way, foot spa is picking up in China as well, but perhaps minus the Jyochu. When I was at Guangzhou, in Panyu district, along 大北路, Foot Spas are like everywhere. Head out onto the streets by dusk and the most prominent mega neon-light displays comes from such foot-spas. You wun missed it unless you're blind. My ex-boss who tried out the foot spa mentioned for approx. S$20, you get green-tea foot jacuzzi, shoulder/neck/head massage from behind, while you watch TV from a selection of DVD titles there, over a 1-hr duration.

Anyways, the streets out there are vice-activities packed. Men's place. If I am able to dig info from the Internet, I might cover a story of it.
